Is MemoHoney Safe? Seven Questions to Answer Before the First Capsule

Written by the MemoHoney editorial team · Published · Last updated · 8 min read · Medically reviewed by Dr. Neelum Aggarwal, MD, Physician

Quick answerIs MemoHoney safe? Nobody can say it is safe for everyone, because no safety study of the product exists. The main concern is blood pressure: arginine and citrulline may lower it and add to blood pressure drugs, nitrates and ED pills. Answer seven questions before the first capsule, and ask a doctor if any answer is yes.

What is known

Is there a safety study of MemoHoney?

No. Nobody has published one, so nobody can measure side effects of this exact capsule. We can only borrow what is known about each ingredient. Most of that research used much bigger doses than one capsule holds. A smaller dose usually means a smaller chance of trouble, but nobody has tested it in this product.

Be wary of any page that calls a supplement completely safe. A label is a list of what is in the bottle. It is not a safety result. The FDA does not approve dietary supplements before they are sold (FDA, Q&A on Dietary Supplements), and that is true of MemoHoney too.

Self-check

Which seven questions should you answer before starting?

Read each question slowly. A yes does not mean never. It means ask a doctor or pharmacist before the first capsule.

  1. 01

    Are you under 18?

On the label, anyone under 18 is told to see a physician before using this or any dietary supplement.

  2. 02

    Are you pregnant or nursing?

Pregnant or nursing mothers are asked by the label to see a physician first.

  3. 03

Do you take blood pressure medicine, nitrates or ED pills?

Arginine and citrulline may lower blood pressure and add to these drugs (Mayo Clinic, L-arginine) (WebMD, L-citrulline). Never adjust a prescription because of a supplement.

  4. 04

Have you ever had a heart attack?

In the VINTAGE MI trial, people given arginine after a heart attack did no better and more of them died, so the trial stopped early (Schulman et al., JAMA 2006). The doses were far larger than one capsule. Your cardiologist should decide.

  5. 05

Do you have a known medical condition, such as kidney or liver disease?

A known medical condition is also on the label's see-a-physician-first list. No study of the product has looked at kidneys or liver.

  6. 06

Do you take other supplements with niacin, arginine or citrulline?

Add up niacin against the 35 mg upper limit from supplements (NIH ODS, Niacin). Nitric oxide and workout powders often carry arginine or citrulline too.

  7. 07

Do you often feel dizzy or faint when you stand up?

That could be low blood pressure. Mention it to your doctor before you add anything that may lower it further.

If you answered no to all seven, that is a reasonable place to start, but it is not a clearance. Only your doctor knows your whole history. Bring the bottle to the appointment.

At a glance

Key facts

  • No study of MemoHoney's safety has been published, and no long-term data exist. What is known comes from research on each ingredient, mostly at larger doses.
  • The body uses arginine, and citrulline once it is converted, to make nitric oxide, a gas that relaxes blood vessels. Blood pressure is the main thing to watch.
  • The label caution names three groups who should see a physician first: pregnant or nursing mothers, anyone under 18 and anyone with a known medical condition.
  • Ask first if you take blood pressure pills, nitrates such as nitroglycerin or ED pills such as sildenafil.
  • After a heart attack, one arginine trial (VINTAGE MI) found no benefit and more deaths in the arginine group. Ask your cardiologist.
  • Niacin flushing and beta-alanine tingling are unlikely at 7.5 mg NE and 40 mg.
  • MemoHoney is not FDA approved, and no supplement is.
Ingredient by ingredient

What side effects are linked to each label line?

Amounts are from the label. The findings are from the linked sources, which often tested higher doses.
LinePer capsuleWhat the sources say
L-arginine400 mg across two formsMay lower blood pressure and stack with blood pressure drugs, nitrates and ED pills. Stomach upset, bloating and diarrhea are reported at gram doses (Mayo Clinic, L-arginine) (MSKCC, Arginine)
L-citrulline200 mg across two formsPossibly safe short term. Might lower blood pressure and add to blood pressure drugs and nitrates (WebMD, L-citrulline)
Beta-alanine40 mgTingling skin is the known effect at 4 to 6 g a day. At 40 mg it is unlikely (Trexler et al., ISSN 2015)
Niacin7.5 mg NEFlushing, with red, burning or itchy skin, starts from about 30 mg of nicotinic acid. 7.5 mg is far below that (NIH ODS, Niacin)
Calcium18 mgThe upper limit is 2,000 to 2,500 mg a day, so 18 mg adds very little (NIH ODS, Calcium)
Headaches

Can brain supplements, or this one, cause headaches?

People search can brain supplements cause headaches, and the honest answer for MemoHoney is that no product data exist. We cannot tell you it does, and we cannot tell you it does not. If you get a new headache after starting any supplement, note the day and the time, and tell your doctor or pharmacist.

A sudden, severe headache with no known cause is a different matter. It can be a stroke sign. Call 911 and note the time it began (CDC, Stroke signs).

Low blood pressure

What does low blood pressure feel like, and what should you do?

Common signs are dizziness or lightheadedness, especially when you stand up. Others notice blurred vision, nausea, odd tiredness or fainting. These signs have many causes, and they do not prove that a supplement is to blame.

What to do if you notice a sign after starting.
What you feelWhat to do
Dizzy when you standRise slowly. If the room spins, sit down again and tell your doctor.
Feeling faintSit or lie down at once. Stop the capsule and phone your doctor that day.
You check pressure at homeWrite down readings in the first weeks and share them.
Fainting, chest pain or trouble breathingCall 911.
No side effects

Does any memory supplement come with no side effects?

No supplement can promise that. A search for memory supplements with no side effects tends to lead to pages that blur natural and harmless. They are not the same thing. Arginine and citrulline, for example, are natural to the body and still may lower blood pressure.

The questions to ask are narrower and better. What exactly is in it? How much? What do I take it with? Who should ask first? A label with an amount on every line, like this one, makes those questions easy to answer. It cannot answer whether you will feel any effect. Our side effects page goes through the interaction list in more depth.

When to call

When should you stop and call someone?

  • Stop the capsule and call your doctor or pharmacist if you feel dizzy, lightheaded or unwell.
  • Call 911 for chest pain, fainting or trouble breathing.
  • Call 911 for stroke signs: sudden numbness or weakness on one side, sudden confusion or trouble speaking, sudden trouble seeing, or a sudden severe headache (CDC, Stroke signs).
  • Book a doctor visit if forgetfulness disrupts daily life. Low B12 and medicine side effects are among the causes that can be treated (NIA, Memory problems and aging).

No supplement should delay that visit. Take the bottle with you, and a list of every medicine you use.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is MemoHoney safe?

No safety study of the product has been published, so no one can promise it is safe for everyone. The main concern is blood pressure, especially for people on blood pressure drugs, nitrates or ED pills.

Who needs a doctor's view before taking MemoHoney?

Anyone under 18, pregnant or nursing, or with a known medical condition, as the label says. Also anyone on blood pressure pills, nitrates or ED pills, or with a heart attack history.

What are the side effects of MemoHoney?

None have been measured for the product. Its ingredients are known mainly for possibly lowering blood pressure. Niacin flushing and beta-alanine tingling are unlikely at the label amounts.

Can MemoHoney cause headaches?

No product data answer this. A new headache should be noted and mentioned to your doctor. A sudden severe headache can be a stroke sign, so call 911.

Is it safe to take memory supplements every day?

That depends on the product and the person. For MemoHoney, the label allows one capsule a day, but no long-term data exist. Ask a doctor if you take any prescription.

What if I feel dizzy after taking MemoHoney?

Sit down, stop taking it and call your doctor or pharmacist with the bottle in hand. Call 911 for fainting, chest pain or trouble breathing.

Our view

Our view

We would rather give you seven honest questions than one false reassurance. Most of them are about blood pressure, because that is where the real interaction risk sits, and because a pharmacist can settle most of them in a few minutes.

The small amounts on the label are a point in its favor on side effects, but they are also a reason the evidence is thin. We try to say both.
